Etymology of the Spurlin surname

Scholarly surname dictionaries derive Spurlin, through Spurling and Sparling, from either an Old English personal name (Spyrling) or a Middle English word for a small fish such as the smelt; the popular 'sparrow' explanation belongs to German Sperling.

Scholarly view

The Dictionary of American Family Names (DAFN, 2nd ed., Oxford University Press, 2022), edited by Patrick Hanks and others, is the main reference for American surnames[1][2]. As quoted by Ancestry, it gives Spurlin as "English: variant of Spurling"[3] and Spurling as "English: variant of Sparling"[4]. Geneanet's surname pages reproduce the same two DAFN entries and give England as the origin of both names.[2][5]

For Sparling and its forms, DAFN gives two English sources

  1. A personal name. Middle English Sperling, Sparling, Spirling, Spurling, from Old English Spyrling. The dictionary adds that this might be a metathesized, shortened form of Old English Sprytling, connected with the first part of the Lincolnshire place-name Spridlington, though it calls that place-name's etymology uncertain[6].
  2. A fish. Middle English sperling, sparling, spirling, spurling, from Anglo-Norman French esperlinge and Middle Dutch spierlinc, "denoting some kind of small fish, perhaps smelt, sprat, pilchard, or whiting". The name could have been given to someone who caught, sold or resembled such fish[6]. See the entry Sparling (the fish) and the Spurlin name.

DAFN also lists Sparling as an Americanized form of German Sperling[6], so some American bearers of these spellings may descend from German immigrants.

Other published explanations

  • SurnameDB (Internet Surname Database) derives Spurling from a pre-7th-century Old English personal name Spyrling, possibly a diminutive of Spearr. It also floats a link to the Sprytlingas, the group thought to have named Spridlington, Lincolnshire[7].
  • Forebears quotes an older work, Elsdon Coles Smith's Dictionary of American Family Names (1956), for Spurlin: "one with some characteristic of a sparrow; dweller near a beam or pole; dweller at the sign of the sparrow"[8]. For Spurling it also quotes two British dictionaries. Henry Harrison's Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) analyses the name as Spur plus a double diminutive suffix -l-ing and compares German sperling, "sparrow". Mark Antony Lower's Patronymica Britannica (1860) gives only "Germ. sperling, a sparrow"[9]. The "sparrow" reading therefore goes back at least to the Victorian period, and it rests on the German word Sperling[10].
  • HouseofNames, a commercial crest seller, calls Spurlin a "baptismal name for the son of Spirling"[11]. A family blog, citing 4Crests.com, traces it to Old English spearwa, "sparrow"[12]. Neither source cites primary evidence.
  • 23andMe's name page gives "English: variant of Spurling" and reports that its customers named Spurlin have mostly British and Irish ancestry (58.9%), with 24.0% French and German[13]. These figures describe modern customers, not where the name began.

The -in spelling

The spelling Spurlin did not start in America. Catalogue descriptions in The National Archives' Discovery database show it in west Middlesex and Bristol between 1670 and 1717, sometimes alongside Spurling for the same family. A 1670 court roll of the manor of Colham, in Hillingdon, calls the father Thomas Spurlin and his daughters Sarah and Mary Spurling[14]. A 1687 probate entry names "Spurling; (Spurlin), Robert" of Hayes, Middlesex[15]. For these and other records, see The Spurlin name outside the United States.

Assessment

The most reliable references agree that Spurlin is an English spelling of Spurling/Sparling, from either the Old English personal name or the fish word[6][5]. The "sparrow" meaning belongs properly to German Sperling. It may apply to Americanized German families, but it is not the established etymology of the English name[6][10]. A theory seen online that derives the name from Old English spor ("track") plus hlinc ("ridge") appeared only in search-engine summaries during this research. It could not be traced to a dictionary and should be treated as unverified.
