This page lists six people named Spurlin who have been inducted into athletic halls of fame run by colleges, counties and high schools. Several of the honors come from Tifton, Georgia, home of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the Tift County Athletic Hall of Fame.[1][2] No Spurlin was found in the state high school coaches' halls of fame that were checked, or among Olympians. Each honor is cited to the hall's own listing or to local news coverage.

College halls of fame

  • Jimmy Spurlin is listed in the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) Athletic Hall of Fame's class of 2022 as a contributor. ABAC's biography says he played baseball there from 1952 to 1954 and was a volunteer assistant coach for its women's softball team from 1988 to 1994.[3]
  • Cindy Shore Spurlin, a 1992 NJCAA All-American softball player, was inducted into the ABAC Athletic Hall of Fame on April 12, 2026.[2]
  • James Spurlin, of Kentucky State University's class of 1950, was inducted into the university's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992. The hall's online listing does not name his sport.[4]
  • Walter Spurlin played men's basketball at Santa Fe College from 1980 to 1982 and joined its hall of fame in 2013. The college lists him as its all-time leading rebounder, with 514 rebounds, ninth in points (932) and 13th in blocked shots (58). He was Santa Fe's All-Sports Male Player of the Year in 1982 and went on to play at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.[5]

County and high school halls of fame

  • Jimmy Spurlin was the Tift County Athletic Hall of Fame's Meritorious Service honoree in 2016, chiefly for coaching youth sports in Tifton.[1] ABAC's biography adds that he was named to the American Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1992.[3]
  • Gwen Cottle Spurlin, who scored 700 points for Tifton High School in 1954–55, was a member of the Tift Athletic Hall of Fame's Class of 2020. The ceremony was delayed by COVID-19 until January 8, 2022; she was too ill to attend and died a week later.[6] At the same ceremony her son, the basketball coach Johnny Spurlin, accepted the award for another inductee, Emmett Smith.[6]
  • Chris Spurlin, a 1990 graduate who ran cross country and track and field, was named to the McDowell (Pennsylvania) Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2024.[7]

Halls checked with no Spurlin

  • State coaches' halls. The coaches listed in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association's hall of fame include no Spurlin,[8] nor does the Texas High School Coaches Association's alphabetical list of Hall of Honor members.[9] The Georgia Coaches Association's online page of inductees, which covers only recent classes, has none either.[10]
  • Olympics. Olympedia lists no Olympian named Spurlin.[11] A search for Spurling goes straight to a single athlete, Bermuda's Dudley Spurling, who swam at the 1936 Games.[12]
