Baseball-Reference's Register, a database of minor league, independent and college players, has eleven people surnamed Spurlin. It also lists three Spurlings.[1] None of the Spurlins played in the major leagues: the site's index of major league players goes from Jay Spurgeon to Chris Spurling to Ed Spurney, with no Spurlin between them.[2] The Spurling-variant pitcher Chris Spurling is the only major leaguer with either spelling.[2] Players with their own articles are linked below.
Minor league and independent
- Al Spurlin (1914–2000): left-handed first baseman for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Class A Southern Association in 1935 and the Columbia Senators of the Class B South Atlantic League in 1936. He batted .278 in 81 games for Columbia.[3]
- Robert Spurlin: first baseman who played 44 games for the Monessen Reds of the Class D Pennsylvania State Association, a Cincinnati affiliate, in 1935. He batted .321 with 11 doubles and one home run. Baseball-Reference gives no birth date for him.[4]
- Bob Spurlin (born 1958): catcher from Northern Illinois University, drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 43rd round in 1980. He played in the Giants and Pirates systems from 1980 to 1984.[5]
- John B. Spurlin: right-handed first and third baseman who played 48 games for the Gulf Coast League Braves, the Atlanta Braves' Rookie-level team, in 1986. He batted .203 with one home run and 18 runs batted in.[6]
- Tyler Spurlin (born 1991): Rice University reliever who pitched in the Milwaukee Brewers' system from 2013 to 2019 and reached the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers.[7]
- Logan Spurlin (born 1994): Northern Kentucky University catcher and first baseman who played independent ball in 2016 for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers (United Shore Professional Baseball League) and the Rockland Boulders (Can-Am League).[8]
College
- Adam Spurlin (Joseph Adam Spurlin, born 1997 in Ty Ty, Georgia): infielder and outfielder at Augusta University (2017) and Elon University (2019–2021). He hit 7 home runs for Elon in 2019 and pitched in 12 games over his three Elon seasons. In the summer of 2018 he played for the Gaithersburg Giants of the Cal Ripken Collegiate League.[9]
- Jake Spurlin: pinch hitter and left fielder at Cal State Northridge in 2017. He was 2-for-17 in 16 games.[10]
- Cade Spurlin: catcher and designated hitter at Dixie State (now Utah Tech) from 2019 to 2021. He hit .389 with a 1.128 OPS in 2019, when the team played in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Dixie State had moved to the Western Athletic Conference by 2021.[11]
- Terrence Spurlin (born 1998): Kansas State first baseman, 2018–2022. He batted .280 over five college seasons.[12]
- Walt Spurlin: listed with Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, Alabama. The page gives no years or statistics.[13]
Other Spurlin baseball honors
Players outside the Register also appear in local sports honors. Jimmy Spurlin, for example, played baseball at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College from 1952 to 1954 and entered its athletic hall of fame in 2022 as a contributor.[14] See Spurlins in athletic halls of fame.
Spurling variant
The register's three Spurlings are Chris Spurling, who pitched for the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers from 2003 to 2007; Jordan Spurling, who played three games for the University of Mount Union in 2017 and 2018; and Sterling Spurling, an infielder for Southwestern College (Kansas) in the NAIA from 2020 to 2022.[1][15][16]
